It is already the end of 2025. We have updated the publication list for this year. Remember that early-bird registration for MARID is open until 1 February 2026. https://www.utwente.nl/en/et/marid26/
Wishing you all a peaceful and joyous end of the year, and like it is said in Germany, a good slide in the new year.
The Institute of Natural Sciences (Brussels), in collaboration with UGent (Department of Geology), is recruiting a PhD student to conduct research on the long-term effects of large-scale sand extraction on sandbanks. The aim is to identify indicators of seabed change by combining geological data and bathymetric time series of more than 30 years, and to proactively contribute to the development of exploitation strategies in environments with increasing sand scarcity. The (fully funded, 4-year) PhD is part of the BANX project (https://lnkd.in/d4G-i6Hd), a Belgian-Dutch collaboration funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and coordinated by the University of Twente. The Geosciences Rennes and Polytech Tours laboratories are offering a thesis on understanding the dynamics of sedimentary bodies and the morphology of the Loire, based on data acquired during an airborne topo-bathymetric lidar campaign.
We would like to draw the attention of river, marine, aeolian, glacial, volcanic and extra-terrestrial geomorphologists and sedimentologists, to the EGU session on “Bedform morphodynamics in terrestrial and planetary environments”. We invite contributions regarding all aspects of bedform dynamics and sedimentary structures in both terrestrial and extra-terrestrial environments. The deadline for abstract submission is 10 January 2024, 13:00 CET but those seeking travel support should submit their abstract by 1 December 2023 (13:00 CET).
The EGU General Assembly will take place from 14 to 19 April 2024 2024 as a hybrid conference where everybody is welcome, in person or online. Our session is taking advantage of the PICO format, offering the opportunity for all scientists to present, discuss and exchange their research with a 2-minute oral followed by presentation time at a touch screen.
We are looking forward to receiving your abstracts and welcoming you to our PICO bedform session!
Kind regards,
Alice Lefebvre, Sjoukje de Lange, Francesco Salese, Thaiënne van Dijk and Leon Scheiber
Over the last decades, large-scale underwater flow-transverse bedforms have been named by a range of terms such as dunes, sand waves, megaripples, antidunes, cyclic steps or sediment waves. However, it is sometimes not clear if these names are describing intrinsically different bedform types or if differences arise from other reasons (for example habits in specific research communities). Furthermore, the parameters used to describe bedform properties are not harmonised so far.
We would like to produce a reference which compares the different types of large-scale underwater flow-transverse bedforms and discusses how to best describe them in a way which is coherent and useful for other researchers. In order to do this, we have created a short survey to collect the opinion, experience and thoughts of researchers from various communities and backgrounds. Our aim is to write a paper which addresses at best the needs and thoughts of the different communities. It would be really great if varied scientists answered the survey. It should take around 10 to 15 min to complete it.
We welcome feedback on our idea for a Bedform Analysis Toolbox Above, the slides of our AGU21 presentation. If you have ideas, comments and want to get involved, leave a comment, or email us at maridwebsite@gmail.com
